Alvaro Siza, winner of the Mies van der Rohe Prize (1988), the Pritzker Prize (1992) and the Praemium Imperiale (1998), is clearly a figure to be reckoned with. Born in 1933 in Matosinhos, on the outskirts of Porto, he is the best-known living Portuguese architect. His very personal blend of Modernist influences and direct responses to projects has given him an international stature that extends far beyond the limited number of buildings he has designed outside Portugal. Within Portugal Alvaro Siza's status is indicated by his recent Lisbon projects - the reconstruction of the Chiado district for example. Fundamentally Modernist and yet rooted in his country's traditions, Alvaro Siza is without any doubt one of the greatest living architects in the world. Philip Jodidio was born in New Jersey in 1954. He studied art history and economics at Harvard, and has been editor-in-chief of the French art magazine Connaissance des Arts in Paris since 1980. He has published numerous studies on contemporary architecture.
