Aldo Rossi, one of the most innovative minds of modern architecture was born in Milan in 1931. He lived and worked in Milan and New York, building in Germany, Holland, France, the USA and Japan, and teaching at a number of universities including Yale and Harvard. He died in 1997 at the age of sixty-sic.

Rossi is important not only for his building but perhaps even more for his ideas. His free use of historical styles, especially classical, places him broadly as a Postmodernist. But he was much more than that. Every project was carefully conceived in relation to a particular purpose and a particular context, priorities that come through most clearly are these irresistible colour drawings, reproduced here for the first time.

To his pupils colleagues and his fellow architect, Rossi was an inspiration. Looking at these drawings, we can understand why.
